Opposition to data centers is surging across America, with 61% of Americans now against new construction in their area, prompting Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to declare the industry 'dug their own grave' by failing to win community support, as governors in Texas, Pennsylvania, and New York impose new restrictions that threaten the physical infrastructure powering the AI boom.
Elon Musk is pushing to launch AI data centers into orbit, claiming unlimited solar power could make space-based computing cheaper than Earth-based systems within three years, though experts warn massive technical and cost hurdles make his aggressive timeline highly unlikely.
AI's explosive growth is crashing into real-world limits on power, land, and water, forcing chipmakers and data center operators to urgently rethink infrastructure as a decade-long enterprise adoption wave threatens to overwhelm global compute capacity.
Top VC firms including Sequoia, a16z, and Khosla Ventures are pouring billions into nuclear power and critical minerals as AI's explosive energy demands outpace existing infrastructure, with Valar Atomics raising $1 billion for small modular reactors and Mariana Minerals securing $310 million for mining operations.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott halts new data center approvals and orders a grid audit as ERCOT faces a staggering 474 gigawatts of pending electricity demand — roughly 90% from data centers — though critics argue the move lacks real enforcement power and demand a special legislative session.
OpenAI breaks ground on a massive $20B data center campus near Savannah, Georgia, while raising its total infrastructure spending to $750B through 2030, though the project's heavy reliance on natural gas power is sparking serious environmental concerns.
OpenAI commits over $30 billion to build a massive data center complex near Savannah, Georgia, securing 3.2 gigawatts of power through Georgia Power Co., with operations beginning in 2028 and full development extending through 2032.
The U.S. Department of Energy selects 278 projects under its record-breaking Genesis Mission, spanning all 50 states and 342 institutions, to accelerate AI-driven scientific discovery in energy, national security, and beyond, with the largest single award being a $60 million investment in AI-powered nuclear energy research.
The Trump Administration commits over $5 billion to the 'Genesis Mission,' a sweeping AI-powered federal initiative spanning 15+ agencies aimed at curing pediatric cancer, expanding the power grid, and doubling America's R&D output through shared data, computing power, and cutting-edge scientific collaboration.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul signs a first-in-nation executive order imposing a one-year moratorium on hyperscale AI data centers exceeding 50 megawatts, citing energy grid strain, water supply concerns, and noise pollution, as a new Gallup poll reveals 7 in 10 Americans oppose local data center construction.
